The Lord wanted to protect Elijah from those who were seeking to kill him, and so He gave him explicit instructions. How did God speak to Him? We do not know, but we do know that He speaks to us through His word . Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” What were the instructions from God to Elijah? Verse three tells us. They were clear, unmistakable, precise, and demanded action. The Lord's instruction involved a wonderful promise (v. 4). "There" is the place of blessing, power, and provision. Elijah was obedient to God's Word (v. 5). "So he went…" suggests that Elijah's obedience was active, instant, complete, and unquestioning. When Elijah obeyed the Lord, He fulfilled His promise (v. 6).
Here are the facts about the Divine supply.
1. The source – God Himself
2. The method – Miraculous
3. The regularity – morning & evening
4. The variety – bread and fish
5. The sufficiency – There was enough until God's purpose was fulfilled.
The key to Elijah's life was the strength he received from God. May God help us to cease from our own strength and appropriate God's strength by committing ourselves to Him moment by moment (Phil. 4:19, Ex. 15:2).
