The Midianites were a wandering band of Bedouins from Arabia. They were masters in the art of plundering, and knew no bowels of compassion. The Bible compares them to grasshoppers, for both in number and destructive force they were like those terrible devourers. God had allowed them to bring Israel into captivity because it had turned to idol worship.
Israel cried out to God in its afflictions and the Lord heard its cry. God in His mercy raised up a deliverer by the name of Gideon. He distinguished himself in various skirmishes with the enemy. It is interesting to see how God could take a man who was troubled with doubt and despair and make him into a mighty conquering hero.
1 Corinthians 1:26,27.
"Did you tackle the trouble that came your way
With a resolute heart and cheerful
Or did you hide your face from the light of day
With a craven heart and fearful?
Oh, a trouble's a ton or a trouble's an ounce,
A trouble is what you make it;
It isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts
But only, how did you take it?"
