The Name Jesus

The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.

Jesus is His saving name.  Matthew 1:21, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

How does Jesus save His people from their sins?

There are three aspects of sin in the human heart.

1.  Sin is a fact with the issues and consequences of a fact.

2.  Sin is a moral and spiritual condition

3.  Sin is a habit under whose tyranny we are held.

Jesus deals with the fact of sin by forgiveness.  Jesus deals with the moral and spiritual condition of sin by the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit.  Jesus deals with the habit of sin by the presence of fellowship with Him.

Jesus is His human name. Matthew 1:23, “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.” He is with us in our human weaknesses.

A boy by the name of George was hired by a lady to clean up her yard and mow her lawn.  When George presented the bill at the end of the month, it was headed “George and Company.”  The woman asked about the title and the boy explained that his dad had told him before he died that it was nice to have a partner to help you do things, and that sometimes a person could have a silent partner.  The boy had made God his silent partner.  He said, “I made Him the Company part of George and Company.  He directs and manages the concern and I do the work.”

Jesus is His exalted name. Philippians 2:9, “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name.”  Verse ten tells us that everyone will someday confess that “Jesus Christ is Lord.”

Prayer: Jesus, help us to receive all the benefits of trusting in your Holy name.
